Scammers are copying trusted phone numbers
Police have seen a spike in calls that appear to come from banks, police or government numbers.
How it works
Caller ID can be changed. The caller may say your account is at risk, ask you to move money or arrange for somebody to collect your card, cash or valuables.
A message might say
“We are from your bank's fraud team. Your account is under attack, so move the money now and do not tell anyone.”
Warning signs
- ●The call arrived unexpectedly and creates panic
- ●You are asked to move money, reveal a PIN or press a number
- ●Somebody offers to collect your card, cash or valuables
What to do
- 1Hang up, even if the number looks genuine
- 2Call the organisation using a number from its official website or your bank card
- 3Report the call to 7726 by texting Call followed by the caller's number
